The Athenaeum

Graphic Design

I want to express my thanks for all your excellent work on the design, production and publication of The Melbourne Athenaeum 170th History. It is an impressively produced document and one which does us all great service in promoting and celebrating our history.

Background: Founded in 1839 as Melbourne’s first Mechanics Institute, the Melbourne Athenaeum has provided visitors with experiences across the spectrum of art and culture.

Brief: Design and produce a history book to celebrate the Athenaeum’s 170th anniversary.

Solution: The project was established with the creation of an anniversary shield logo, which was then applied as a gold foil to the front cover. The design is understated and elegant, with photography of the institution used throughout the document. The internal pages are one-colour sepia and the text is interspersed with old photograph borders, details from letters and engravings. The overall impression is of a historical document with a contemporary twist.
